Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Starting dose: Mild asthma 200-400 mcg daily, may be increased up to 800 mcg daily. Moderate to severe asthma 1,600 mcg daily. Maintenance dose: Adult, elderly, childn & adolescent >12 yr 100-400 mcg bd, may be increased up to 1,600 mcg bd in severe asthma. Childn 6-12 yr 100-200 mcg bd, may be increased up to 800 mcg bd. Mild to moderate asthma Patient w/o previous inhaled corticosteroids 200-400 mcg once daily, patient already controlled on inhaled corticosteroids Once daily dosing up to 800 mcg. Steroid-naive childn 6-12 yr or controlled on inhaled corticosteroids 200-400 mcg once daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to budesonide or lactose.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if paradoxical bronchospasm occur. Not indicated for acute dyspnoea or status asthmaticus. Active or quiescent TB, fungal, viral & other airway infections; asthma exacerbations. Adrenal suppression, decreased bone mineral density, cataract or glaucoma. Monitor HPA axis functions regularly. Ensure proper oral hygiene after each administration to avoid oral candidiasis. Administer short-term therapy in patients w/ excessive resp tract mucous secretion. Transferring from oral to inhaled steroids. Avoid abrupt discontinuation. High doses or prolonged use. Not to be taken by patients w/ galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Avoid concomitant use w/ ketoconazole or other potent CYP3A4 inhibitors. Severe hepatic dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation. Monitor height in childn & adolescents to avoid growth retardation.
Adverse Reactions
Hoarseness, cough & throat irritation; oropharyngeal candidiasis; difficulty in swallowing.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma levels w/ ketoconazole & other potent CYP3A4 inhibitors. Increased risk of systemic side effects w/ cobicistat-containing products.
